Black Caps cruise to easy win over Kenya

Posted by Hamish McBrearty on March 21st, 2007

The New Zealand Black Caps eased by cricketing minnows Kenya by 148 runs in St Lucia to go top of Group C in the ICC Cricket World Cup.

After their win over England on Friday, the Black Caps secured their place in the Super 8 against a valiant Kenyan side. In an all around team effort, four Black Caps’ batsmen made half centuries with Ross Taylor top scoring with 85.

On the bowling side wickets were shared amongst Daniel Vettori, the recalled Jeetan Patel and Michael Mason with two a piece. Captain Stephen Fleming admitted after the game that the team had been pretty nervous going into the game with the erratic form his side has shown of late.

New Zealand will be without the services of batsman Taylor for the final group match against Canada after he strained his hamstring muscle taking a quick single. Taylor batted the rest of his innings with a runner, but looked uncomfortable at the crease and was out soon after.

For the Kenyans there were a few positives to take out of this loss, the main one being Ravi Shar’s defiant innings of 71. Bowler Thomas Odoyo also became the first Kenyan bowler to take 100 ODI wickets when he dismissed Kiwi danger man Jacob Oram.

Kenya has one more group match against England, which if the win would see them through to the Super 8 stage. However after England’s loss to New Zealand, and subsequent off field troubles, they will be far too good for Kenya. The Black Caps play Canada in their final group stage match, a game they are expected to win easily.
