First Super Eights game spills over into tomorrow
Posted by Hamish McBrearty on March 28th, 2007
The Super Eights started today with the hosts the West Indies playing Australia. But just as the West Indies were about to start their run chase, the rain came forcing the game to be concluded tomorrow.
The West Indies won the toss and elected to field first, a decision they would quickly regret as Matthew Hayden went on to his second century in a row, scoring 158 from just 143 balls. Hayden was well supported by Michael Clarke with 41 before Shane Watson added a rapid fire 33 from only 26 balls.
As the West Indian batsmen were preparing themselves to chase Australia’s massive total of 322, the rain came and it stayed. As the cut off time drew near the rain broke and it was announced the West Indies would be chasing 163 from 20 overs, but before the players even left their dressing rooms the rain returned.
Tomorrow the West Indies will have the full 50 overs to chase Australia’s total, if the rain stays away. If the West Indies’ innings is limited to less than 20 overs by the rain, the game will have “no result” and both teams get a competition point each.
