Semi finalists decided at Cricket World Cup

Almost a week ago I posted an article to Sportingo saying that the semi finalists were a fore gone conclusion and got quite a bit of flak for it. After today’s win by South Africa, it looks like I was right.
With only four games remaining in the Super 8s, only the order of the top four teams can change. If Sri Lanka beat Ireland tomorrow, they could jump past New Zealand and into second place if they improve their net run rate. But even if Sri Lanka’s net run rate stays below New Zealand’s, they will almost certainly play the loser of Friday’s game between New Zealand and Australia, while the winner will face South Africa.
The most likely semi final match ups are New Zealand playing Sri Lanka and Australia playing South Africa. Interestingly enough, Sri Lanka have been something of a bogey team for New Zealand, while South Africa have had the edge over Australia recently. However, once the tournament comes down to the semi finals, anything can happen as each of these teams is capable of beating any of the others in a one off match.
After suffering through a World Cup which has been a procession of meaningless matches, fans finally have some good games to look forward to.
