The Wellington Phoenix crashed to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Adelaide United over the weekend, extending their losing streak to four games. The fans continue to rally behind their team, but the cries of “it can only get better” are getting a little tiresome, especially as things continue to get worse for the club.

The Wellington Phoenix sit six points outside the top four and start a three game road trip which will make or break their season. In their first A-League season they have shown a great deal of promise up front, but it is their defence which must improve if they are to claim a post season spot.

IRB chairman Syd Millar has called for the use of rugby’s experimental laws in next year’s Super 14, but that call has come a little late for one Super 14 coach.

During pool play at the Rugby World Cup there was free and opening running but in the knockout stage the game was dominated by stifling defence. The South African’s ability to switch gears was one of the major reasons they now have the Webb Ellis trophy for the next four years.

The league leading Central Coast Mariners came into town and claimed all three points as the Wellington Phoenix once again imploded on defence and went down 2-1 at Westpac Stadium.

In a titanic struggle fitting of the World Cup final it was South Africa who made the most of their chances to claim their second World Cup title with a 15-6 win over England at Stad de France.

The IRB have finally admitted what All Blacks fans knew all along, Wayne Barnes made a number of mistakes in the quarter-final between New Zealand and France. However their public backing of Barnes raises a number of questions.

Both teams were depleted with players on international duty but the Newcastle Jets took all three points as they put away the Wellington Phoenix 2-0 in their A League clash at Energy Australia Stadium in Newcastle.
