The league leading Central Coast Mariners came into town and claimed all three points as the Wellington Phoenix once again imploded on defence and went down 2-1 at Westpac Stadium.

As the rugby season winds down, I need something to fill the gap and football fits the bill quite nicely. However, as a newcomer to the game, there are a few things that really bug me.

Both teams were depleted with players on international duty but the Newcastle Jets took all three points as they put away the Wellington Phoenix 2-0 in their A League clash at Energy Australia Stadium in Newcastle.

Fifa cancelled the World Cup qualifier between New Zealand and Fiji after the New Zealand government refused to grant a visa to Fijian goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau. But in this clash between politicians and sports administrators, it is the players and fans who lose.
